Insect Sun is Ilan Yaniv from Haifa. Born 1971, Ilan has a vast background in music, he plays guitar (all sorts) since the age of 14, used to teach guitar playing, and also worked with musical equipment of all kinds. He played in a lot of rock and metal bands, among them Damnation and Merry's fair. In 95 while hangin' out in London during the jungle craze, he got infected with electronic music, bought a Groove Box and started purchasing a lot of equipment. He traveled through a lot of genres, working on jungle, industrial, remixing, working with singers, and doing everything that was weird and interesting. The CD that got him into trance was X-Dream's Radio, the hard sounds that he hadn't heard in trance till then made him want to experiment with this music. Same goes with Psy-Harmonics Ozzie stuff.
Ilan has never really been part of the trance scene, he's more a man of dark clubs than sunrises in nature.
Work in the studio is usually sitting down and flowing with the sounds, throwing loops and sounds until things melt together and the track is there. Even if there is an idea beforehand it usually changes during the work and the outcome is completely different. The story, atmosphere and directions are important. Most of the work is on the build of the track.
Musical influences are a lot of techno, especially Jeff Mills, FSOL, Yumade, 3.Turn, Paps, Synchro, Koxbox.
His debut album- Slow Dive- was released on Balloonia in March 2002. He also released Two 12"s- Low Life (Balloonia) & Like Insects (Hadshot Haheizar). Another 12" is due soon on Magma. On compilations he released so far: The Dream (Israeli Flip on Henfield), Till (Eruption), The Room (Analog Reflections vol. 3), Listen (Israeli Pitch Process). |
