Depths of Despair is Sahara Melamed, born in 1983 and living in Haifa, Israel.
Shahar has been making music since he was 14, starting from industrial guitar driven tracks, and later moving on to more experimental fields of electronic music. Slowly, his sound evolved into a hybrid of experimental electronica, flirting with trance, ambient, dub and break beat.
Shahar is influenced by a vast range of styles and artists. Coming from an alternative rock background, he is mainly influenced by bands such as Tool, Earthtone9, Skinlab, Mahumodo, Sonic Youth, Tuatara, Explosions in the sky & A Perfect Circle. Electronic artists that have influenced him are Telefon Tel Aviv, Noiseshaper, Ulrich Schnauss, Squarepusher and Tipper.
His music is never written in the same method. He can start making a track because of a good vocal sample, a messed up beat, or just a state of mind. From there the track just flows on itself. It can take anything from a few days to a few months to complete. Each track fits a different shade or mood.
His first album- False Sense of Security- was released on August 2003 through Spiritual Beings.
Shahar is also the resident chillout DJ on the Thursday trance nights in the Luna club, Haifa. |
